This is implied in the definition of tragedy: catharsis releases us from pity and fear. In other words, pity and fear are the necessary preconditions for catharsis. The term actually means purgation and its origin is in medicine, although in the context of the analysis of drama it has sometimes been suggested that Aristotle meant the refinement of emotions or man’s moral healing.
