I was extremely passive in the face of his alcoholic violence. I was frightened. I had never been a sturdy child, having had frequent attacks of asthma as a kid, in sharp contrast to my healthier elder brother. I was skinny and often in and out of hospitals. The tradition of Sikh male is to be strong and with a fighting spirit. My father – orphaned early on – was such a fighter and he must have been deeply disappointed with me. While my elder brother got praised for his physical strength and stature, I think that my physical weakness embarrassed him.

As children, we liked our life in Ireland, as it was the only life we knew. I had friends and enjoyed the community I lived in, even though it was split and violent. In Strabane when at school, I was a different character. I became one of the lads. I had friends and I felt they were badly needed. I came out of my shell. So Panjabi became identified with being closed in. I was kind of a rebel but passive when teachers were around, I was loud and gesticulated wildly in their absence. I was a clown.

I remember my childhood as a constant uprooting from one community to another, from one country to another, from one language to another, from one accent to another. Perhaps as a result, I have acquired chameleon-like skills to adjust to different environments. My parents had always planned to return to India once they had made ‘enough’ money in Ireland.
