Marre's table, to accompany pUblication of the Triparty in 1880, was based mainly but not entirely on Chuquet's own headings, and we present it (with some minor variations) in Appendix I. The first part of the Triparty is an arithmetic, fairly conventional for its day, but including names for large numbers and the "rule of intermediate terms". This rule is, somewhat surprisingly, the one item in the whole work which Chuquet claims to be his own original invention.
