Then I had a stroke of luck, and found a relatively cheap studio. The Crown Estates managed a number of properties at the edge of Regent’s Park, which sometimes became available at reasonable rents. Among this cluster of properties was the Diorama, which had been built in the mid-nineteenth century to give experimental film shows. Although a building of genuine historical importance, it was by the 1980s in a dilapidated state and was boarded up and unused. A couple of enterprising artists went in and took it over, effectively as squatters.
